Connect Freight

As part of the Innovation statement 'Victorians. Bright Ideas. Brilliant Futures', the State Government has provided funding of $4 million for the Connect Freight program, previously known as Smart Freight.

Through the application of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) solutions, Connect Freight aims to generate efficiency gains and reduce congestion in the Port of Melbourne supply chain.

The Connect Freight program has delivered the following projects:

• Real-time travel, queuing and delay information via website, SMS and email updates for fleet operators and truck drivers, to assist better fleet movement and reduce congestion in the Port precinct.
  
  
• The Port of Melbourne Supply Chain Model maps transactions in import and export supply chains. The Model shows how and where stakeholders in the chain interact, why they interact and the technologies available. The Model was used as a basis for the Whole of Supply Chain Awareness interactive website, released in June 2008.
  
  
• The Victorian Government contributed $75,000 to assist the Port’s biggest exporter – Murray Goulburn Co-operative – to undertake a container movement efficiency trial.
  
  
• The eDIT (Electronic Documentation and Information Transfer) pilot is trialling a range of online tools to assist participants in the supply chain to obtain and share key business information quickly and easily in a standard electronic format.
