Project overview
The project has improved standard gauge rail connections to the Port of Geelong enabling increased rail share of port related freight transport.
Specifically, the project provided:
- Standard gauge rail connection to the North Shore precinct
- Three standard gauge sidings in North Shore Yard to improve yard operations
- A new rail bridge over Cowies Creek
- Standard gauge connection to Midway Log siding, to accommodate projected trade growth
- An independent dual gauge freight line to access North Shore yard for both standard and broad gauge freight trains from Geelong
Additional track and signal works around the Corio Quay area have also been completed. These works will enable Geelong Port to connect standard gauge access to the rail network in the future so they can better utilise rail freight.
The design and construction of a range of track and civil improvements, including new dual gauge lines, improved storage facilities, a new rail bridge and three new sidings, was completed by John Holland. The signalling works were completed by Westinghouse Rail Systems.
