Victorian Integrated Survey of Travel and Activity

The Victorian Integrated Survey of Travel and Activity 2009 (VISTA 09) will run from July 2009 to June 2010. The survey collects information from households in Melbourne, Geelong and the regional centres of Ballarat, Bendigo, Shepparton and Latrobe.

Overview of VISTA 09

VISTA 09 asks members of surveyed households to complete a travel diary for a specified day. By collecting information on all personal travel made - from walking the dog, through to a flight interstate - VISTA09 will enhance our understanding of the complex travel interactions occurring in our communities.

This detailed picture of travel will inform the transport and land-use planning decisions being made by Government. Furthermore, by surveying different households on different days of the year, seasonal changes in travel behaviour can be identified.

VISTA 09 is being undertaken on behalf of the Department of Transport by the Urban Transport Institute and I-View Pty Ltd.

Information for VISTA 09 Survey Participants
To get a comprehensive picture of travel in Melbourne, the Department would like to obtain a response from all selected households. This is regardless of whether household members travel a lot, or hardly at all.

If your household has been selected to participate in VISTA 09, and you have any queries, please do not hesitate to ring the survey office on 1800 034 523 (free call), or email the survey team. You may also like to read the answers to Frequently Asked Questions (PDF, 56 KB, 4 pp.) about VISTA 09.

All information collected through VISTA 09 is treated confidentially. Results are aggregated to provide an overview of daily travel across a region, and all personal contact information is deleted from survey data prior to its use for transport planning purposes. No name, address or contact information of VISTA 09 participants is kept by the Department of Transport.

Results from Previous Survey (VISTA 07)
VISTA 09 builds on the information collected as part of the equivalent 2007-08 survey (VISTA 07). Results from the VISTA 07 survey have already been used by the Department in the development of the Victorian Transport Plan and to update the Melbourne Integrated Transport Model (MITM).

VISTA 07 results will be made publicly available from December 2009. This will include a web analysis tool to analyse key VISTA 07 transport themes at a local government area level.
