Benefits

The $700 million transformation of the former Spencer Street Station precinct is one of the most significant infrastructure redevelopments Victoria has ever seen.

The airport style transport interchange provides Victorians with a new world-class and iconic landmark. The station links the regions and the emerging Docklands precinct with the central business district of Melbourne.
  • The transport interchange features airport-like facilities, providing passengers with a 21st century travel experience.
  • It is fully Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliant with stairs, escalators and wheelchair accessible lifts linking all sections of the precinct. Tactile paving also helps vision impaired customers.
  • There are clear directional signs, 120 new passenger information screens and multiple points along Collins, Spencer and Bourke Streets.
  • An 800 space car park and five minute drop off area makes it easier to drop off and pick up family and friends.
  • Passengers can enjoy a fully sheltered and brand new coach terminal complete with enclosed waiting areas, passenger information and an undercover walkway link to the train station terminal.
  • The new commercial developments include a DFO (Direct Factory Outlet) with more than 120 speciality shops and food courts.

Water harvesting project

Southern Cross Station has been harvesting water for reuse since early 2009.

A detailed design project was carried out at Southern Cross Station in 2007-08, which assessed how to capture the greatest possible amount of rain water from the station roof for reuse both within and outside of the station.

The result is two large rain water bladders with a combined capacity of more than 200,000 litres.

Works were completed in March 2009 and collected water is now being reused within the station for a range of cleaning and operational purposes.

Water harvesting at the station has been funded by the Victorian Government.
