Funding and background information
The Victorian Government has a plan to create a quality cross-town and local area bus network that complements Melbourne's train and tram services.
As part of the
Victorian Transport Plan, the State Government has committed $500 million to upgrade local bus services and to boost bus services into Melbourne's growth areas as they develop.
Since 2006, improvements have been made to more than 145 bus routes with longer operating hours, route extensions and more services, more often.
To determine which areas require upgraded services, DOT worked with local government councils and bus operators to identify the areas of greatest need. As a result, the improvements include:
- introducing new routes to areas that have had previously little or no bus services
- providing additional services to areas where there has been a growth in demand
- changing routes to make sure that they can be accessed by more people
- providing extra services during evenings and on weekends.
The State Government will continue to identify bus needs of local communities through a bus review program which began in 2007. See
Metropolitan Bus Service Reviews for more information.
