Purpose and background

The Fare Enough course has been developed in consultation with the Magistrates' Court, public transport operators, community organisations and welfare agencies.

It has been designed to help people, who could otherwise become caught in a cycle of offending and punishment, to use public transport with a better understanding of the public transport system and their obligations when using it.

The Transport Act 1983 was amended in 2006 to allow courts to sentence public transport offenders to attend and complete the course.

Course content

The Fare Enough training course covers the following topics:
  • Victoria's ticketing system
  • the role of public transport as a community asset and people's right to travel safely and comfortably
  • the community benefits of public transport
  • the rights and responsibilities of people travelling on public transport
  • the serious impact of fare evasion on revenue
  • the role of Authorised Officers
The Kangan Batman TAFE delivers the course.
