New and refurbished trains and trams
The Government has an ongoing program to modernise Victoria's train and tram fleets. Many new and refurbished vehicles are currently operating on city, suburban and regional networks.

New metropolitan trains

Thirty eight
X'Trapolis six-car sets will be rolled-out from late 2009 to 2011. This fleet will be manufactured by Alstom and maintained by United Group Ltd at its Melbourne depots.
Completed January 2006
Thirty six Siemens six-car sets were constructed by Siemens in Austria and fitted out in Melbourne at the Newport workshops. These trains are maintained by Siemens Rail Services, Melbourne
Completed January 2004
Twenty-nine X'Trapolis six-car sets were completed in January 2004. The first 3 trains were manufactured by Alstom in France. Assembly was then transferred to Ballarat. These trains are maintained by United Melbourne Transport.
Future deliveries
Under the Victorian Transport Plan, Melbourne's train system will move from a suburban commuter service to a
modern metro system. To help this transition the Victorian Government is ordering up to 70 new metropolitan trains.
The
2009-10 State Budget has committed $650.6 million for 20 new X'Trapolis trains, bringing the total now on order to 38. The first of the new six-carriage X'Trapolis trains will roll onto the metropolitan network in late 2009.
Once these are on the tracks, Melbourne's first next generation trains, with 30 per cent more room to help people get on and off quickly, will begin arriving.
New regional trains

Fifty four VLocity motorised carriages to be delivered:
- 4 intermediate cars by mid 2009
- 8 intermediate cars by December 2010
- 32 intermediate and diesel cars by December 2012.
The carriages will be manufactured by Bombardier Transportation in Dandenong and maintained by Carriage Maintenance Facility, Melbourne.
Completed December 2007
Two VLocity two-car diesel train sets were manufactured by Bombardier Transportation in Dandenong. They are maintained by Carriage Maintenance Facility, Melbourne.
Completed October 2006

Completed November 2004
Fifty seven
Combino trams were delivered in November 2004, which consisted of:
- 38 three-module Cominbos
- 21 five-module Combinos.

Citadis trams were constructed by Alstom in La Rochelle in France and fitted out in Melbourne at the Preston workshops. They are maintained by United Melbourne Transport.
Future deliveries
The
2009-10 State Budget includes a $5 million commitment to speed up the delivery of up to 50 new low-floor trams, as outlined in the Victorian Transport Plan. This year's funding will initiate a competitive tender process and begin advance design works on the Preston tram depot.
By 2012/13 the first of these low-floor trams, which will be considerably larger than those now on the network, will begin arriving.
In the meantime, the State Government is leasing five trams from the town of Mulhouse in France for use on Route 96. The trams are equivalent in size to the longest trams already running in Melbourne and can carry about 240 passengers. The trams will be leased until December 2011.
Refurbished trains
Completed December 2003
V/Line carriages were repaired and upgraded, including:
- H-class carriage doors and new livery
- conversion of six BCZ carriages to BZN carriages to increase passenger capacity
- installation of accessible toilets.
These works were completed by EDI at the Newport workshops.
Completed December 2002
187 Comeng three-car sets were refurbished, which included:
- new seats
- floor covers
- internal passenger information electronic display signs
- automatic voice announcements
- passenger intercoms and alarms
- closed circuit surveillance cameras.
These works were completed by Alstom Australia in Ballarat and EDI in Somerton.
Future deliveries
Fifty five V/Line 'H-Class' carriages and 21 V/Line Sprinters are being refurbished with new interior furnishings, updated livery and upgraded toilets. EDI Rail at West Melbourne and Newport. This project has been impacted by the huge increase in patronage, meaning that all available fleet is needed on the track.
The project to fit door safety mechanisms to 85 N,S and Z class locomotive-hauled V/Line carriages is complete. New locks have been fitted, so that only V/Line staff are able to open the doors, ensuring passengers cannot open the doors while the trains are in transit.
Refurbished trams
Completed November 2006
Thirty one Z1 and Z2 Class trams were refurbished with:
- new livery
- driver's cab security doors
- repainting stanchions and grills
- new seat covers
- general repairs.
Internal works were undertaken by Yarra Trams at the East Preston depot. External painting undertaken by Yarra Trams at East Preston and United Group at the Preston Workshops.
Completed September 2006
New livery, seat covers, flooring, improved signage, hand grips, high contrast stanchions, grab handles and step edging were undertaken on the following:
- 11 Z3 Class Trams
- 70 A Class Trams
- 132 B Class Trams.
Works were completed by Yarra Trams at the East Preston depot.
