Channel deepening
The Port of Melbourne Corporation commenced deepening sections of Melbourne's shipping channels to provide access for 14 metre draught vessels at all stages of the tide within Port Phillip Bay and the Yarra River in February 2008.
Major dredging works were completed in August 2009 with all works, including minor dredging in the Yarra River and works on navigation aids, berths and services protection to be completed by the end of the year.
The project has been subject to strict environmental conditions which are being overseen by an independent environmental monitor.
For more information on the project including the Environmental Management Plan, dredging schedule, fact sheets, frequently asked questions, and environmental monitoring results visit the channel deepening project website.
