The need for a Melbourne Port@L Strategy
Victoria’s total freight task is expected to more than double over the next 30 years. A significant and growing proportion of this freight movement is centred around the Port of Melbourne and the transport of international containers.
To deal with this metropolitan international container task growth, Victoria needs to better integrate the Port of Melbourne with road and rail infrastructure and freight terminal facilities to ensure freight can be moved quickly and efficiently with minimum adverse social and environmental impact.
The
Port@L Strategy is needed to provide an effective long term strategic planning framework to optimise existing land and infrastructure, ensure development of efficient transport links and manage the predicted freight trade growth sustainably.
Melbourne Port@L Strategy Consultation Draft & Next Steps
The
Melbourne Port@L Strategy Consultation Draft (PDF, 4,732 KB, 23 pp.) was released in August 2006 and sets out the context and key drivers for the Melbourne
Port@L Strategy and the principles and key strategic elements which constitute it.

Freight Futures
In December 2008 the Government released the Victorian Transport Plan (VTP) and Freight Futures, the Victorian Freight Network Strategy.
