Central Activities Districts and Transit Cities
Central Activities Districts concentrate jobs and services into specific locations to help people spend less time travelling, reduce traffic congestion and ensure our transport infrastructure is used more efficiently.
The Victorian Transport Plan has committed more than $60 million to encourage the development of CADs in the following suburbs:
Similar work at locations in regional Victoria are known as Transit Cities.
For more information on these projects visit the
DPCD website. Delivery of Central Activities Districts is also a key feature of the Government's
Melbourne @ 5 million strategy. By combining future transport and land use decisions we can minimise pressure on the city and inner city caused by Melbourne’s predicted growth.
Our involvement with CADs
The Department of Transport:
- coordinates the delivery of significant transport infrastructure and service improvements
- works very closely with DPCD in the development of CADs and Transit Cities and works to a joint business plan which sets out the shared objectives, tasks and deliverables
- develops close working relationships with local government councils to coordinate infrastructure projects with community planning and community development, and
- facilitates access to public transport planning and property services, as well as involvement of specialist expertise through partner agencies including VicUrban, VicRoads and VicTrack.
