Aboriginal employment programs

The Department of Transport (DOT) has a strong commitment to building a diverse and inclusive workplace, including supporting Aboriginal people as part of the Department of Transport Aboriginal Action Plan – Stage 1 and the DOT Diversity and Inclusion Strategy 2010-12.

The aspiration of DOT is to create and foster an inclusive workplace culture recognising people for their unique contributions, differences and their commitments, with success not being measured by numbers of Aboriginal people working in the department but also our engagement and understanding.

Through reaching our aspiration DOT aims to increase Aboriginal people’s participation within the workforce, in particular across the transport portfolio.

DOT Aboriginal Employment Strategy and Action Plan

The DOT Aboriginal Employment Strategy (PDF, 765.7 KB, 12 pp.) aims to build a diverse work force with a higher representation of Aboriginal people, which will strengthen the capacity of DOT to work in partnership with Aboriginal communities at all levels.

The strategy has been developed for DOT to achieve systemic change in regards to Aboriginal employment. Central to our strategy is the establishment of increased pathways for Aboriginal people to enter and progress their careers in DOT and across the transport portfolio, by providing an inclusive workplace which values and respects Aboriginal people.

There are 5 key themes within the DOT’s Aboriginal Employment Strategy which the action plan focuses on which include:

  1. Identifying and building pathways from education to DOT employment
Through the identification and establishment of sustainable pathways from education and DOT employment, DOT will assist Aboriginal people in the transition from training, education or external employment to careers within DOT.
  2. Promotion of employment opportunities
The promotion and advertising of employment opportunities to Aboriginal jobseekers to expand the number of Aboriginal people working in DOT.
  3. Supporting and retaining Aboriginal people in DOT
DOT will provide well-supported induction for Aboriginal people and will ensure it is able to support DOT Aboriginal people in their connection to family and community. The development of the skills and capacity of DOT's Aboriginal people will assist in the achieving a range of goals including:
    • achieving appropriate representation of Aboriginal people at all levels
    • retaining Aboriginal people in DOT
    • providing better services to the community
    • creating new Aboriginal employment opportunities, through the promotion of Aboriginal people working in entry level targeted Aboriginal positions.
  4. Enhancing an inclusive culture
DOT's culture is one which values and respects all people. DOT will provide activities to increase the Aboriginal cultural awareness and competency of its people, allowing for the opportunity to enhance DOT's inclusiveness.
  5. Governance and monitoring
Through the development of effective monitoring and evaluation processes of the DOT Aboriginal Employment Strategy, the attainment of goals and objectives will be measured through the delegation of organisational responsibility.

Karreeta Yirramboi. Victorian Aboriginal Public Sector Employment and Career Development Action Plan 2010 - 2015

Karreeta Yirramboi is a long-term strategy for increasing Aboriginal participation in the Victorian public sector workforce. This strategy is an integral part of Victoria's broader Aboriginal economic development agenda, and signals the Victorian Government's commitment to the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) target to halve the gap in employment outcomes between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians. Karreeta is the Gunditjmara word for 'grow' and Yirramboi is the Taungurung word meaning 'tomorrow'.

The strategy can be downloaded from the Aboriginal Affairs Taskforce website.

The DOT Aboriginal Employment Strategy and Action Plan have been developed in alignment with the Karreeta Yirramboi strategy.
