Objectives of the plan

The purpose of the DOT Aboriginal Action Plan is to:

  • assist DOT people to recognise, respect and celebrate the contribution of Aboriginal Victorians to Victorian community life, through their daily work and at key events.
  • appreciate the unique Aboriginal cultural heritage of Victoria, particularly in the development, planning and implementation of transport system policies, infrastructure, programs and services.
  • create equality of opportunity and outcomes for Aboriginal Victorians through:
  • improved transport outcomes to support social, cultural and economic opportunities
  • better employment, training and economic development opportunities in the transport and logistics sector.
  • build the capacity of Aboriginal people to engage in transport and land-use decision making and solution delivery.

Key themes

The five key themes of the plan provide the solid basis for promoting a positive relationship between DOT and Aboriginal communities.

  1. Recognition and respect
Work with Aboriginal communities to find shared ways to acknowledge and achieve cultural aspirations and an inclusive culture in transport planning and provision.
  2. Living heritage
Aboriginal cultural heritage management is an important factor in transport planning and DOT is committed to helping manage Aboriginal heritage sites in relation to all aspects of our operations.
  3. Engagement and reconciliation
Engagement with Aboriginal people must include Aboriginal community organisations, native title traditional owners, the broader Aboriginal community, family networks and individuals. An Aboriginal reference group will be established to guide and support the department.
  4. Aboriginal employment
DOT has a strong commitment to building a diverse and inclusive workplace. DOT has developed an Aboriginal Employment Strategy and Action Plan to outline the Department's commitment to Aboriginal employment and addressing the disadvantages experienced by Aboriginal people.
  5. Improving social and economic inclusion for Aboriginal people through better access to transport
The transport portfolio helps all Victorians to access transport through a variety of initiatives. DOT is committed to better understand transport issues affecting Aboriginal people, particularly where these issues may be affecting social, cultural and economic opportunities.
