Legislation establishing the Port of Hastings Development Authority
The Transport Legislation Amendment (Port of Hastings Development Authority) Act 2011 was passed by Parliament and given Royal Assent in August 2011.
The Act establishes an independent Port of Hastings Development Authority as a key first step in fast-tracking development of Hastings as a future container port.
The authority will complement the Port of Melbourne Corporation, Australia’s busiest container port, in handling the massive growth in container trade projected for Victoria.
The Act reverses the 2010 merger of the management of the ports of Melbourne and Hastings under the Port of Melbourne Corporation, setting Melbourne’s container ports sector on a path to faster growth through increased capacity and competition.
The authority is established as a transport corporation under the Transport Integration Act 2010.
The Act commenced on 1 January 2012.
