Development of new regional intermodal terminals
The Department of Transport, in conjunction with industry and local governments, plans and develops intermodal terminals.
State and local government support is being sought by industry for intermodal terminal infrastructure (rail sidings, hard stand etc.), planning and land use.
Dooen
The current site at Horsham is limited in area for growth and requires upgraded infrastructure.
An alternative greenfield site at Dooen, 11 km north-east of Horsham, is presently being planned which would improve operational efficiency and reduce costs. It also has greater availability of land for increased container throughput as well as a bulk loading facility for grain.
The proposal has received $16 million in funding from the Federal and State Governments and the Horsham Rural City Council as well as in kind private sector contributions. The proposal is being project managed by GHD in association with Coffey Rail and is planned for completion by mid 2011.
Gippsland
The Gippsland Logistics Precinct is located in the central Gippsland town or Morwell. It consists of 64 hectares of land owned by Latrobe City Council and a rail siding running off the main Gippsland line into the Gippsland Intermodal Freight Terminal. This will be reopened as part of development of the overall logistics precinct.
Gippsland is home to significant industries including energy, timber and paper, food and agribusiness. The development of the Gippsland Logistic Precinct aims to provide a rail terminal able to meet the needs of the wider Gippsland region.
Visit the Council website for a copy of the project plan for the Gippsland Logistics Precinct.
Shepparton and West Warrnambool
Upgrade works are planned for the intermodal terminal in West Warrnambool and the City of Greater Shepparton is planning a new freight terminal.
