Western Interstate Freight Terminal

Project description

A new interstate rail terminal will be created in Melbourne's west to allow relocation of domestic intermodal freight handling from South Dynon.

Interstate domestic freight, which currently travels through the metropolitan area to Dynon, will be able to terminate at Donnybrook/Beveridge for distribution throughout Melbourne. This will reduce the need for some larger trucks to travel into the City.

This will be the first step in a new network of major intermodal freight terminals outside the Port of Melbourne.

The Victorian Government is seeking Infrastructure Australia support for Commonwealth funding for planning and project development activities of $10 million (nominal 2012-13) over 2 years commencing 2012-13.

Project benefits

  • Reduced freight traffic through the inner west and to the Port of Melbourne
    • it will remove 2000 truck movements into the Port of Melbourne every day.
  • Enable development of the South Dynon area for port-related activities.
  • Improved connectivity between road and rail freight traffic.
  • Improved freight efficiency by fewer unnecessary truck movements.
