Freight consolidation

Internationally, there has been a move for some local councils to establish urban consolidation centres, typically public-private partnerships located to service high-volume freight areas, such as a CBD or major suburban activity.

Freight consolidation aims to:

  • maximise the loads carried by individual vehicles, reducing the number of partially loaded vehicles on the roads
  • minimise the number of deliveries to a particular site
  • simplify deliveries for freight customers – more efficient ordering and procurement
  • enable the use of High Productivity Freight Vehicles (HPFVs)
