Network access and permits

Different roads have different limitations on the vehicles that are permitted to use them. Limitations could be related to:

  • Vehicle size
  • Vehicle height
  • Vehicle weight
  • Time of day
  • Carriage of dangerous goods

Generally, rigid trucks and articulated combinations transporting freight at up to 42.5 tonnes, 4.3 metres high and 2.5 metres wide may operate on all roads except those that are mass limited or have a mass limited bridge or height restriction.

Travel restrictions exist for combinations in excess of 42.5 tonnes, such as B-doubles or semi-trailers operating at Higher Mass Limits.

Exceptions and permits

VicRoads, in consultation with local government, has produced a list of over 1,000 local roads where heavier and over-dimentional vehicles can operate: Local Roads Approved for B-doubles and Higher Mass Limits Trucks can be found on the VicRoads website.

For travel on roads that are not covered by this list, the operator will be required to contact the relevant council for written permission and then get a permit from VicRoads approving this access. Frequently asked questions and other information on this process can be found on the VicRoads website.

Over-dimensional freight is restricted to certain routes. The location of the roads forming the over-dimensional network is available from VicRoads.

Access to port environs can involve permits or booked timeslots for picking up or dropping off freight from ports or container parks, especially for High Productivity Freight Vehicles. Fees and charges might also apply, particularly around the Port of Melbourne. Further information is available from the following links:
