Webb Dock West as an alternative to relocation in Geelong is discussed at the end of this study.
Background
In February 2011, the Minister announced a feasibility study into relocating the import and export of motor vehicles from the Port of Melbourne to Victoria's second largest port, the Port of Geelong.
In July 2011, a Discussion paper - Relocating motor vehicle importing and exporting to the Port of Geelong (PDF, 2.25 MB, 48 pp.) was released which
- detailed the automotive industry and supply chain at the time
- set out a concept proposal for an automotive terminal at Geelong, and
- invited submissions from interested parties.
The discussion paper was developed in close consultation with the automotive industry, shipping lines, the Port of Melbourne Corporation and the Port of Geelong.
Stakeholder input and advice was critical in developing a holistic understanding of the current industry and in identifying all the potential issues associated with relocation to Geelong.
