The Department of Transport is committed to protecting personal and sensitive information in line with the principles set out in the Information Privacy Act 2000 (Vic.). This privacy statement applies only to the Department of Transport websites only.

Use and disclosure of personal information

The Department of Transport will only ask you for personal information when you subcribe to a departmental mailing list or to allow us to respond to your feedback.

Collecting personal information allows us answer your queries about a particular site or give you information you want. We will only use and disclose information for these purposes.

If you give feedback without giving us your personal information, we will not be able to respond to you.

Personal information that is collected by the department will be used by and disclosed to Victorian Government employees or contractors who need to use it. Such employees and contractors must protect and handle your personal information in line with the Information Privacy Act 2000 (Vic.).

Access to and correction of personal information

You may access any personal information that we have collected about you. You may also have your personal information corrected if you can establish that it is not accurate, complete or up-to-date.

Collection of personal information

Generally our website can be used anonymously. But, some functions mean that we must collect personal information.

If we ask you to provide personal information, then you will know we are collecting it. There are two exceptions.

You will not know if we have collected personal information if someone else has provided it. We cannot prevent this. However, you are entitled to access and correct any personal information about you we have collected.

You may now know we have collected personali information when we collect statistics of website usage by analysing web server log files. These statistics may qualify as personal information under the Information Privacy Act 2000 (Vic.). However, they are not used to identify individual website users.

Internet use risks

There are risks in transmitting information across the Internet. However, we take reasonable steps to protect any personal information from unauthorised access once that personal information comes into our possession.

Visitor information

Visitor logs and cookies are used to gather statistical information about the use of this website. These tools give us general data such as  number of visits, pages viewed, browser type, how the site is navigated, sections of the website visited and other website usage information. We get this data without identifying individual users. We will not attempt to identify you or your browsing activity. This information will only be used to update and improve the site.

A cookie is a small piece of information (a text file) that a web server can place temporarily on your hard drive or web browser. It is used by your browser to identify the pages that you have visited on our site. A cookie is uniquely yours and can only be read by the server that gave it to you. Note that the Cookie will remain on your computer as a record for future visits to this website.

We do not record any personal information, collect names or details of commercial transactions when we use cookies. You can configure your browser to notify you when you receive a cookie, giving you with the opportunity to either accept or reject it. You can also refuse all cookies by turning them off in your browser, or delete all cookies from your computer if required.
