Port of Hastings Development
The Victorian Government has committed to developing a second container port in Victoria to complement the Port of Melbourne and to cater for the growth of container movements in and out of the state.
With container throughput at the Port of Melbourne expected to quadruple over the next 25 years the Port of Hastings development is critical for the future of the growing freight trade and the viability of the sector well beyond the next decade.
The Government is seeking Infrastructure Australia support for Commonwealth funding of $120 million (nominal 2012-13) over 4 years, commencing in 2012-13 to prepare for construction of the first stage of the development of the Port of Hastings including associated transport corridor planning required.
Port of Hastings Development Authority
The Port of Hastings Development Authority (PoHDA) is a new state owned enterprise established through the Transport Legislation Amendment (Port of Hastings Development Authority) Bill 2011 under the Transport Integration Act 2010.
The PoHDA commenced on 1 January 2012 and is responsible for facilitating development of the Port of Hastings to increase capacity and competition in the container ports sector servicing Melbourne and Victoria.
Project Scope
The PoHDA will determine the project scope. The authority will undertake economic, environmental and social impact assessments, and prepare detailed plans for the development of container handling capacity at the Port of Hastings, including connections to road and rail corridors and potential transport linkages to inland freight terminals.
The Government’s intention is to progress planning for the Port of Hastings development to ensure that additional container handling capacity will be available for operation within the next 10-15 years.
