myki - new ticketing system

What's happening

Victoria's new public transport ticketing system, myki, is valid for travel on Melbourne's trains, trams and buses.

myki is available for purchase online at www.myki.com.au or via the call centre at 13myki (136954) and at Southern Cross Station.

From March 26, weekly and monthly Metcards will no longer be available. The gradual introduction of myki card sales and top up services at all 7-Eleven outlets and 90 independent retailers, will start in February 2012.

The progressive removal of Metcard ticket vending machines from Metro railway stations, will start in February 2012 with some CBD locations and then the Williamstown line.

The introduction of myki card sales at retailers that currently offer myki top up services, will start in mid-March.

Train and bus users should touch on and touch off when they travel with myki to ensure they get the lowest fare every time. The only customers who need to touch off on a tram to get the lowest fare are those who travel exclusively in the Zone 1 and 2 overlap area on the tram network.

Project description

The myki ticketing system will replace the Metcard system used on our metropolitan public transport network. The myki and Metcard systems will operate alongside each other until the end of 2012. myki also replaces the former ticketing system on V/Line’s commuter belt services to Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Seymour and Traralgon.

Project benefits

  • myki is an electronic smartcard system, eliminating the need for public transport users to carry cash to purchase tickets – money can be stored on myki and topped up in different ways.
  • The same card can be used for travel on metropolitan trains, trams and buses as well as V/Line trains to key commuter destinations such as Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Seymour and Traralgon.
  • myki can also be used on regional town buses in Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong, Moe, Morwell, Traralgon, Warragul and Seymour. This provides a simple and easy way to travel around Victoria on public transport.
  • Once myki is fully implemented, users will no longer have to think about zones and types of tickets – myki will do this automatically by calculating the lowest fare for a journey or series of journeys.
  • In addition, the new ticketing system will collect more reliable and accurate travel data, which will allow for better planning of public transport infrastructure and services.
