Ringwood Station and Interchange Upgrade

Timeframe: Planning and consultation began June 2011. Works proposed to start in 2014/15.
Cost: $60 million

What's happening

The Department of Transport has worked with local stakeholders to develop a concept design for the upgrade of Ringwood Station and bus interchange.  The design has incorporated feedback received from an extensive period of public comment.

A summary of key findings from the feedback is available in the December 2011 edition of the Ringwood Community Newsletter.

Project description

The Victorian Government is working to make Ringwood a safer, more accessible and attractive place for people to live, work and visit, and has committed to an upgrade of Ringwood Station and bus interchange.

The upgrade will provide modern, integrated transport facilities, including:

  • a new pedestrian footbridge
  • station forecourt
  • accessible platforms
  • and a range of building, safety, and amenity improvements.

The upgraded precinct will also integrate with other development plans for Ringwood, such as the Queensland Investment Corporation's plan for a major expansion of Eastland Shopping Centre, new city centre and redevelopment of Ringwood's former market site.

The Department of Transport is also working in collaboration with the Department of Planning and Community Development and Maroondah City Council to prepare a masterplan for the station precinct that will guide future public and private investment, and consider different actions to encourage redevelopment in the station precinct.

Community involvement

In June 2011, the Department of Transport began working with local representatives and public transport users to develop a proposed concept for upgrading the Ringwood Station precinct.

Community involvement included:

  • focus groups with station users
  • community workshops – invited groups included Ringwood Community Reference Group, RSL, Ringwood Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and a range of local disability, safety and public transport advocacy groups
  • technical stakeholder workshops - Metro Trains, bus operators, disability specialists
  • youth workshop with Ringwood Secondary College

Project features

The upgraded precinct will contribute to central Ringwood becoming a safer and more vibrant community space. Features include:

  • new pedestrian footbridge with provision for potential long-term extension over Maroondah Highway to Eastland
  • improved station facilities and amenities for staff and passengers, including new shelter, lighting, seating, upgraded toilets, improved electronic signage and CCTV coverage
  • new station forecourt
  • upgraded bus interchange with improved passenger amenities, shelter and new public toilets
  • safer and wider signalised pedestrian crossing, which is "double cycled" so pedestrians receive a green crossing signal twice as often as now
  • dedicated drop-off and taxi areas, and disabled parking
  • landscaping works to enhance a 'boulevard' feel along Maroondah Highway
  • improved footpath along Station Street, between Wantirna Road and the new footbridge
  • Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliant access between station platforms, bus interchange and Station Street

The existing historic brick station building nearest to Eastland Shopping Centre will be maintained, but other structures will be replaced with buildings sympathetic to Ringwood's heritage but with modern facilities. The proposed concept design will avoid impact on Clocktower Park.
