Sunbury Electrification Project overview
The $270 million Sunbury Electrification Project will electrify the rail line from Watergardens to Sunbury and change the way trains in the Sydenham-Sunbury corridor currently operate. It will allow them to carry more passengers and run more reliably, which is vital to the ongoing viability of Melbourne's broader train network.
The project will enable metropolitan trains to run to and from Sunbury, metropolitan trains can carry more than double the number of passengers than V/Line trains. This will provide relief on the Sydenham line, one of the busiest lines on the network.
The project will also result in the ability to fit more metropolitan trains into the timetable thus improving the service levels for passengers on the Sydenham-Sunbury corridor.
Works to electrify the network to Sunbury began in 2010 with metropolitan trains to run from Sunbury in 2012.
The project involves:
- installation of electrical infrastructure between Watergardens and Sunbury
- construction of stabling facilities at Sunbury Station
- construction of an additional 500 passenger car parking spaces at Diggers Rest Station
- an extra 100 car park spaces near Sunbury Station dedicated for passengers
- station improvements at Sunbury and Diggers Rest stations.
O'Donnell Griffin and Laing O'Rourke Electrification Joint Venture have joined Public Transport Victoria and the rail operators, Metro and V/Line, in an Alliance to deliver this major project.
