TravelSmart travel planning

A Victorian Government initiative from 2001 to 2012, TravelSmart reduced people's dependency on cars anTravelSmart logod encouraged them to choose sustainable transport alternatives such as cycling, walking and public transport. The majority of trips in Victoria are less than five kilometers in distance, so there is room to increase the number of people walking and cycling. Uptake of these transport modes, particularly for short trips, helps to mitigate congestion, improve health through active travel, reduce traffic-related pollution and increase safety and liveability in communities.

TravelSmart in Victoria shifted away from community-based marketing programs and adopted the strategic engagement process of travel planning to effect real change in the way we travel. The process supports smarter travel choices – changing one or two trips per week, or reducing the number of car journeys.

Travel planning has been successfully implemented in a range of settings in Victoria, including schools, workplaces, tertiary institutions and communities. Find out more about travel planning in practice.
