Taxi Industry Safety Taskforce

The Taxi Industry Safety Taskforce, which was established in August 2006, conducted a thorough review of taxi driver safety and well-being within the Victorian taxi industry. Working with senior government officials, an extensive plan was developed to make the Victorian taxi industry safer for drivers and passengers.

Recommendations

The plan is articulated in the Victorian Taxi Safety Strategy.

An extensive ongoing consultation process with industry stakeholders ensured its proposed reforms reflect the needs of the industry and the travelling public.

The approach is based on:

  • protecting drivers
  • informing drivers
  • training drivers
  • supporting drivers
  • listening to drivers.

Achievements

The Taxi Industry Safety Taskforce resulted in a number of achievements, including:

  • the bringing together of expert Government agencies through the formation of the taskforce
  • improved communication with drivers through the Drive Time taxi newsletter
  • the trial and evaluation of taxi security screens
  • the establishment and support of a taxi driver representative group, the Victorian Taxi Drivers Association
  • consultation with more than 1,200 taxi drivers
  • introduction of the driver accreditation scheme and a new taxi industry accreditation scheme.

Establishment of the taskforce

The taskforce had senior permanent representation from:

  • Victoria Police
  • Equal Opportunity Commission
  • Victorian Multicultural Commission
  • Crime Prevention Victoria
  • Victorian WorkCover Authority
