The Victorian Taxi Directorate (VTD) has reaffirmed its tough stance on fraud with the conviction of a taxi driver found guilty of defrauding the Multi Purpose Taxi Program (MPTP).
The $52 million Multi Purpose Taxi Program provides subsidised taxi travel to people with severe and permanent disabilities.
The 55-year-old driver was found guilty of illegally using nine MPTP member cards between January 2009 and November 2010 and was ordered to repay nearly $6,000 in illegal fares.
VTD General Manager Marnie Williams said the successful conviction and restitution of the defrauded money was a testament to VTD's hardline approach to tackling MPTP fraud.
"This is an excellent outcome that sends a strong message to the taxi industry that the VTD will not tolerate fraud,” Ms Williams said.
"Every dollar defrauded from this critical program is a crime against some of our community’s most disadvantaged, who rely on the MPTP to stay connected with services, work, family and friends.
"Successful prosecutions like this one help ensure MPTP funds reach those who need it the most.
"The VTD will continue to thoroughly investigate and take action in all cases relating to fraud."
The MPTP provides members half price taxi fares up to $60 per single trip and a yearly cap.
Fare payments for MPTP trips must be processed through the electronic terminals in taxis. MPTP emergency vouchers should only be used in the rare occurrence that the electronic terminal is not working.
