Replacing taxi-cab registration plates
The following information relates to process involved with obtaining replacement taxi cab registration plates.
Replacing lost or stolen taxi cab registration plate(s)
If the registration plate(s) on your taxi-cab have been lost or stolen, you can arrange to change the registration number and order new registration plate(s).
Application forms
An order for change of registration plates must be made by the licence operator by:
- calling the VTD on telephone 1800 638 802 and arranging for an application form to be sent to you, or
- completing an application form at the VTD:
You must then complete and return the application to the VTD or fax to 8683 0777. Payment of the new registration plates is done at the point of collection. Please make your cheque or money order payable to the ‘Victorian Taxi Directorate’. Credit card and cash facilities are only available in person at the VTD.
Plate cost
New Plates = $31.20
Ordering change of registration plates
Where the plate(s) have been lost or stolen you are required to provide a Police report in addition to the completed application form.
Processing your request for change of registration plates
When the VTD has verified the details on your application, you will be notified by telephone of the new registration plate number. You must now prepare your vehicle with the door decals to reflect this number. For those who are operating from outside the metropolitan area, the VTD will forward the registration plate(s) to your nominated VicRoads office. You will receive written notification to attend this office to collect your registration plates. You should take this notification with you when you attend the VicRoads office.
Picking up plates
When you attend the VTD/VicRoads office you must present:
- The vehicle you intend to attach the new registration plates with the new door decals.
- Driver licence confirming identity.
- If you are nominating someone else to collect the plates on your behalf, that person must, in addition to providing their driver licence, also present a signed letter of authority from you being the licence operator allowing them to act on your behalf (include nominated persons name and drivers licence number). If the licence operator is a company, this must be on company letterhead.
The letter must also include the old and new plate number. - Registration plate (only applicable when only one plate has been lost or stolen).
Issue of plates
When the VTD/VicRoads is satisfied of the above requirements:
- In the case of taxi-cabs operating in the metropolitan area, a VTD officer will conduct an inspection of the vehicle to make sure that the decals have been changed to match the new vehicle registration number.
- In the case of taxi-cabs operating from outside the metropolitan area, VicRoads will amend the registration details with the change of number, inspect the vehicle decals and issue the new registration plates.
- You will also receive a new vehicle registration label. When the VTD is satisfied that the above requirements have been met, you will be issued with an amended commercial passenger vehicle licence.

Replacing damaged taxi cab registration plate(s)
If the number plate(s) on your taxi-cab have been damaged, you can arrange to order a replacement plate(s) through the VTD. Replacement plate(s) must have the same letter and number combination as your existing plates.
Application forms
An order for replacement plate(s) must be made by the licence operator by:
- calling the VTD on telephone 1800 638 802 and arranging for an application form to be sent to you, or
- completing an application form at the VTD.
You must then complete and return the application in person or by post to the VTD. The application must also include a cheque or money order for the registration plate(s). Please make cheques or money orders payable to the ‘Victorian Taxi Directorate’. Credit card and cash facilities are only available in person at the VTD.
Plate costs
- 1 x Plate = $29.00
- 2 x Plates = $58.00
If you are operating from outside the metropolitan area, you will also be required to nominate which VicRoads office you intend to collect your registration plate(s).
Processing your request for replacement plate(s)
When the VTD has verified the details on the application and processed payment, an order will be placed for the replacement plate(s). It will normally take approximately seven working days for the replacement plate(s) to be received at the VTD. When the plate(s) have arrived you will receive written advice to attend the VTD or if you are operating from outside the metropolitan area, your nominated VicRoads office. You should bring this advice with you when you attend the VTD/VicRoads office.
Collection of plate(s)
When you attend the VTD/VicRoads office you must present:
- Your written advice from the VTD confirming the plate(s) are ready for collection.
- Current drivers licence confirming identity.
- If you are nominating someone else to collect the plates on your behalf, that person must, in addition to providing their drivers licence, also present a signed letter of authority from you being the licence operator allowing them to act on your behalf (include nominated persons name and drivers licence number). If the licence operator is a company, this must be on company letterhead.
The letter must also include the replacement plate number.
- The current damaged plate(s) to be exchanged for the replacement plates(s).
Issue of plates
When the VTD/VicRoads is satisfied of the above requirements:
- The plates will be issued over the counter at the VTD.
- In the case of taxi-cabs operating from outside the Metropolitan area, the replacement place will be sent to your nominated VicRoads office.
