The following is an update for applicants that have applied for a fixed-term wheelchair accessible taxi licence under stage two of the Greater Melbourne Taxi Licence Release (GMTLR).
The VTD wishes to advise that the last date that WAT fixed-term licences can be granted is 13 September 2011.On 9 August 2011, the VTD wrote to the relevant GMTLR WAT fixed-term licence applicants with further information in relation to this.
Greater Melbourne Taxi Licence Release update (24 June 2011)
The following is an update for applicants that have applied for a fixed-term wheelchair accessible taxi licence under stage two of the Greater Melbourne Taxi Licence Release (GMTLR).
Applicants should note that the uniform price for a 10-year fixed-term wheelchair accessible taxi licence has now been finalised. Selected bidders will pay a first instalment price of $AUD26,400.
Licence holders who have paid a first instalment amount greater than $AUD26,400 will have the difference between the two amounts refunded to them shortly.
Unsuccessful applicants will be also be notified of the outcome of their application by mail in the coming weeks.
Please note the first instalment price of $AUD26,400 detailed above applies only for 10-year fixed-term wheelchair accessible taxi licences. Selected bidders for 10-year fixed-term conventional taxi licences will pay a uniform price of $AUD180,000.
Greater Melbourne Taxi Licence Release update (9 November 2010)
The following is an update for applicants that have applied for a fixed-term wheelchair accessible taxi licence under stage two of the Greater Melbourne Taxi Licence Release (GMTLR).
The Department of Transport is still in the process of assessing applications. Some applicants who have progressed to 'phase three' of the assessment process have been notified by mail. Once the tender process is complete, every applicant will receive written notification of the outcome of their application.
People should also note that the uniform price for a fixed-term wheelchair accessible taxi licence is yet to be determined. However, the department has advised applicants that they will pay a first instalment price of no more than $28,550.
Why is the Victorian Government releasing more taxi licences?
The government is now releasing up to 530 new taxi licences to respond to growth in demand for taxis in Melbourne.
Importantly, 330 of these licences will be for wheelchair accessible taxis. This is a significant boost to the wheelchair accessible taxi fleet in Melbourne, and ensures that people with mobility issues can access taxi services more easily.

What are the key features of the release?
Key features of this licence release include:
- up to 330 fixed-term wheelchair accessible taxi licences and up to 200 fixed-term conventional taxi licences for Greater Melbourne
- fixed-term licences will operate for a fixed-term of 10 years only
- fixed-term licences are not assignable, however can be transferred
- the licence fee for a conventional fixed-term taxi licence will be payable in advance, on grant of the licence
- the licence fee for a fixed-term wheelchair accessible taxi licence will be payable in 10 annual instalments (with each instalment indexed in accordance with movement in the Consumer Price Index).
