Melbourne Metro - New Rail Tunnel (Stage 1)
| Timeframe: | Short-medium term
| | |
| Cost: | More than $4.5 billion | | |
What's happening
In the 2009-10 Federal Budget Victoria received $3.265 billion for Victoria from the Building Australia Fund, with $3.225 billion for Regional Rail Link and $40 million to get working on the Melbourne Metro Rail Tunnel.
Project description
Melbourne Metro stage one is a major new rail tunnel between Dynon and in the west and St Kilda Road at Domain. This new underground link will benefit the entire metropolitan rail network by creating more rail track in the inner-city.
With stops at Melbourne Central and Flinders Street, it will give people from all lines an easy interchange point to access new stations at Parkville and St Kilda Road. This will help to relieve pressure on trams in Swanston Street and St Kilda Road.
Melbourne Metro stage one was included as a short-medium term priority in the State's Infrastructure Australia funding submission to the Commonwealth Government.
Stage 2, linking Domain to Caulfield with additional tracks between Caulfield and Westall, will be considered in the longer term.
Project benefits
- Unclog Melbourne's busiest rail corridor.
- Create additional space for more than 14 trains each hour on the Craigieburn, Sunbury, Werribee, Williamstown and Upfield lines. Additional space will be delivered to around 12,000 passengers each hour on these busy lines.
- Link people to jobs, growth and education in Parkville and St Kilda Road.
