What's happening
The Deer Park Bypass is now open to traffic, eight months ahead of schedule. The new bypass provides a new, direct link from the Western Ring Road to the Western Freeway. Motorists travelling through Melbourne's western suburbs are now enjoying significant travel time savings and safety benefits.
Project description
The Deer Park Bypass is a 9.3km freeway connecting the Western Ring Road in Sunshine West to the Western Highway in Caroline Springs.
Specifically the project involves the construction of:
- two lanes of freeway standard road in each direction
- freeway interchanges with direct access to the Western Highway, Christies Road, Robinsons Road and the Western Ring Road
- overpasses of the Melbourne-Ballarat rail line and Riding Boundary Road
- an underpass at Mt Derrimut Road
- noise walls at some locations
- a new shared use path for pedestrians and cyclists.
The project also involved the elimination of the Leakes Road intersection with the Western Freeway at Rockbank. This now operates as a full diamond interchange improving safety and reducing travel times.
The Deer Park Bypass is a jointly funded project between the Victorian and Commonwealth Governments.
Project benefits
- Motorists will enjoy safer freeway driving conditions and bypass seven sets of traffic lights along the Western Highway.
- The Deer Park community will benefit from less through traffic on the Western Highway, resulting in enhanced urban amenity and improved access for local residents.
- The Deer Park Bypass will form a crucial link in Victoria's freight and logistics chain, reducing travel times between the State's western region and the Port of Melbourne.
- The opening of the Deer Park Bypass and elimination of the Leakes Road intersection will significantly improve traffic flow and road safety in the area.
