What's happening
The extension of the Springvale Road SmartBus through to Airport West has created 100 new bus driver jobs. The new Route 902 will start service in early 2010. See the
media release.
In early 2011 SmartBus Route 901 will be extended to Melbourne Airport via Blackburn, Greensborough, South Morang, Epping, Roxburgh Park and Broadmeadows. See the
updated SmartBus network map.
The
2009-10 State Budget will spend $85.9 million to extend the existing SmartBus Route 901 (Ringwood - Frankston) to Melbourne Airport via Blackburn, Greensborough, South Morang, Epping and Roxburgh Park.
The budget also allocates $112.1 million to implement the
Doncaster Area Rapid Transit System (DART), which will upgrade four Eastern Freeway bus routes to SmartBus standards.
Project description
The Victorian Government is rolling out a network of SmartBus routes across Melbourne.
SmartBus is a premium bus service that has been designed to complement Melbourne's radial train and tram network, by providing 'cross-town' connections along major arterial roads to train stations, tram lines, schools, universities, hospitals, shopping centres and other activity centres.
SmartBus services run more often and for longer hours than most bus services. They are also more reliable because of a combination of road priority works and the use of smart technology.
The Victorian Transport Plan will continue to expand the SmartBus network, with the introduction of three Orbital SmartBus routes:
- Red Orbital (Route 903): The Mordialloc to Box Hill route has been extended to Altona through Doncaster, Heidelberg, Preston, Coburg, Essendon and Sunshine.
- Green Orbital (Future Route 902): The existing Springvale route will be extended to Airport West through Doncaster, Eltham, Greensborough and Broadmeadows.
- Yellow Orbital (Route 901): The existing Ringwood to Frankston route will be extended to Melbourne Airport through Blackburn, Greensborough, South Morang, Epping, Roxburgh Park and Broadmeadows.
Project benefits
- SmartBus offers a premium service including 15 minute frequency, extended service hours, real time passenger information and on-road priority.
- SmartBus provides cross-town connections to train stations, tram lines and activity centres.
