Frankston and Mornington Peninsula residents will soon benefit from three new bus routes and new upgrades to three existing routes. The three new routes will provide bus services to St Andrews Beach, Chisholm TAFE in Rosebud and the Lathams Rd industrial precinct. Improvements to three existing bus routes in Frankston and Langwarrin will see operating hours extended to 9pm, seven days a week. Read the media release.

Work on the Nagambie Bypass can begin by the end of the year, with BMD Constructions Pty Ltd awarded the contract to duplicate a 3.5 kilometre section of the highway between Kirwans Bridge-Longwood Road and Weir Road.

Planning is about to start on a major road connection linking the Port of Melbourne to the Western Ring Road. The $10 million study is the first major step in the WestLink project, which will connect our western suburbs and cater for future growth in Melbourne.

Community volunteers are encouraged to join the Peninsula Link team by nominating for the project's Community Advisory Group. This group will provide valuable local input during the development and construction of the new 25 kilometre freeway. The Regional Rail Link project has reached another major milestone with the appointment of Kellogg Brown and Root (KBR) and Arup to complete the final planning and geotechnical work before construction starts in 2010.

Premier John Brumby has unveiled Melbourne's first new Xtrapolis train. The new Xtrapolis trains feature a new seating configuration especially designed for Melbourne's unique transport needs. The first train will be in service in December this year. View the image gallery.

Two companies have been short-listed to design and build Melbourne's fleet of 50 new low floor trams. Alstom and Bombardier will be invited to tender before the end of the year.

Local access arrangements for the new Western Freeway route between Melton and Bacchus Marsh have been finalised, with the inclusion of two new ramps providing direct freeway access at Hopetoun Park Road.

Bus passengers can now enjoy a safer and more environmentally friendly wait for the bus, with the 200th solar-powered bus shelter has been installed on Williamstown at Spotswood. This is one of the Metropolitan Bus Upgrades.

In early October 2009, the main components of the new Laverton Station footbridge were lifted into place. Once completed, the new footbridge will provide commuters with an attractive and modern structure that is fully compliant with disability guidelines including stair and lift access to the station platforms.

New ramps on the West Gate Freeway will allow drivers to travel on new sections of the freeway from Sunday 3 October. As part of the $1.39 billion Monash-CityLink-West Gate Upgrade, the new ramps will reduce merging and weaving on the freeway and further separate traffic according to destination. As part of the $140 million Springvale Road Rail Separation project, Nunawading's new railway station will feature a bubble skylight roof design. Melbourne commuters will find helping hands at stations, tram stops and major bus interchanges to help with the transition of the new myki ticketing system. Public Transport Minister Lynne Kosky has announced the creation of 600 new temporary customer service jobs to be stationed across the network to help passenger make the shift to myki.

Early works have progressed on the Springvale Road Rail Separation project, with more than 200 piles constructed for the railway line retaining walls and for the new Springvale Road bridge foundations.

Soil and engineering testing works on the Melbourne Metro project could start before the end of the year with the Premier John Brumby revealing concept designs of stations and opportunities for urban renewal.
Works are also underway on the $15 million Yarra Glen Truck Bypass. People living and working in Yarra Glen and surrounds can look forward to improved road safety and amenity through the busy town centre.

The new concourse at North Melbourne Station is now open. Escalators and lifts are functioning, along with new passenger information displays, so people can quickly find out what platform they need, and get there quicker. Work is continuing on the new station building, and the entire project is scheduled to be completed in 2010.

Work has begun on a new dedicated bike and pedestrian bridge over Merri Creek between Westgarth and North Fitzroy. The bridge will provide a connection between existing bike paths, providing a safer and more accessible alternative to the road route over St Georges Road and the Rushall Station Footbridge.
